Knowing Your Ladders - Changes In Ladder Standards

October 1, 2017

Ladder standards are changing. From 01st January 2018 European Standards EN131 have been simplified into two categories.

- EN131 Non Professional (Domestic Use Ladders)

- EN131 Professional (Workplace Use Ladders)

These two standards replace all previous standards including BS2037 Class 1 Industrial and BS2037 Class 3 Domestic.

The new requirements will not only simplify the standards to make it easier for the end user to make the right choice when selecting a ladder or step, but it will also improve the safety of the ladders being used with the new standards enhancing durability, stability and strength.

From this date all ladders domestic or professional will have to have a capacity rating no less than 150kg.

All existing ladders (as long as in good condition and with appropriate labeling) and stock will still comply with previous EN131/BS2037 standards until all old stock is exhausted.

As manufacturer of Drabest products, our parent company are currently in the process of re-testing all of our existing products to ensure that they meet all new EN131 standards by the end of the transitional period.
